Johnny Cash—God's Gonna Cut You Down

Via Chris (via Youtube).

I wonder whether the various celebrities who appear in this video were actually listening to the lyrics.

I wonder.

Some of them look a little uneasy.

Some of them probably think "Me? There's nothing wrong with ME!"

the "sinners make the best saints" graffiti is kind of stupid. Everyone's a sinner. :) And everyone sanctified in Christ is a saint. Or maybe they don't want to hear the point of ALL of us being dead in sin until we repent and are revived and sanctified by the grace of God through the mercies of Christ and the life-giving Spirit. Oh, that's just so judgmental and all. :)

So, glad to meet you. I'm a sinner AND I'm a saint. Praise be to God.

Great tune by the Man in Black.

Well, I guess Bono might be taking a Catholic line and pointing out that the greatest, most passionate saints were often the most passionate sinners before they converted?

Mary wasn't. John the Baptist wasn't. And though St. Paul called himself the "chiefest of sinners", I would say that this is the hyperbole of a man so close to God's truth that his own failings loom large, rather than his actually being such a huge sinner by comparison to the rest. Teresa of Avila wasn't, or of Lisieux, or Joseph, or Aquinas, or Joan of Arc, or Bernadette, or Hildegarde, or Patrick...

It's a worthless statement thrown out as a euphemism for "judge not", trust me.

I'm going to refrain from guessing what Bono's actually thinking.

Always a good strategy

I don't think that those celebrities crapped their pants because they were asked to appear in the video, most likely they felt honored by it. Although the song has very powerful lyrics, it is still a piece of of art, not some divine warning. Thus those who turned up for the shooting might gave a few thougts about their lifestyle but it won't change their minds for sure. It is still just a show, though a magnificent piece...

Cash is reminding us that we go the way of all flesh, no matter how great or how small we are. Beyond that I think he is saying that unless you follow "God's will" there will be hell to pay when you die and just remember that on the "day of reckoning" you will be judged so take care what you do while you are alive. It's a primitive spirituality that makes you want to control your base desires to avoid punishment. It's a haunting lingering fear we all have to a degree, that we will anger God and pay the penalty. To me all the celebrities are demonstrating what the lyrics and the melody mean to them as individuals.

mirtika, I think Christ addressed this when he said 'it is not the healthy that need a physician, but the sick.' The Pharisees and Scribes believed themselves to be clean, to be righteous, but as you said, we are all sinners; Christ then must be saying that he has come for those that know they are sinners, and believe it. Thus I don't believe the graffiti is actually that stupid.

Lol Okay. How many arrogant, righteous people are out there? How many believe that one must be perfect in order to lead any type of ministry? Believe it or not, a lot do. I believe that's what Bono is talking about. People really try to make a distinction between Saints and sinners. Bono was speaking to those people, I think. I thought it was a great message.

I actually thought Bono's comment was very Biblically sound. God did not come to heal those who are well, but the sick, poor, oppressed. He came for those who were spiritually bankrupt. Those who are such are those according to 1 Cor. 1:26-29. We are not to revel in our sin, but rejoice in sinners being graciously redeemed. All are sinners, but not all recognize their need upon Christ. Those who such a state before their redeemer really are the best saints.

Dude, he stoned people and killed Christians. That's hardly hyperbole.

Look again guys...

Its not Sinners make the best saints.

It is $inners make the Saints (with the S in saint as a serpent, and the A a pyramid and the T a cross)

Each one of these 'actors/musicians' in this video has sold their soul, they sin for cash.

Bono, a known Satanist and follower of Aleister Crowley (the self proclaimed "Beast 666")devotes a large portion of his time to 'charities' such as population control. His work is seen as benevolent to the ignorant, but are actually no different then yester years Eugenics programs.

The serpernt in this is telling, it represents trickery, and deception. (the serpent tricking Eve into eating the apple from the tree).
When he says $inners make the best "Saints" he means that Sinners, the whole cabal of hollywood/media puppet sell outs make the best (false) saints (deceptive ones, false idols).

The pyramid is just a nod to the Illuminati/Luciferian interests that these artists work (whether they know it or not). The numerous pyramid/triangle references and "One eye" (the eye of Lucifer/Horus) are all through the video. Jay Z in particular (but Jay Z is full fledged Mason. Google his Illuminati/Rocawear for more symbolism on his line of clothing).

Watch the video again and just think about where each symbol appears in the video. "Working in the dark against your fellow man" appears as Jay Z holds the Illuminati pyramid up with his eye through it and many more just like it. (Skull symbolism all over it)

If any of you have worked in the movie or music industry you will for surely understand that nothing in this happened by coincidence.

well i dontknow why everyone is arguing about this 'bono graffitti?" its a johnny cash quote that bono stood in front of

In my opinion, you guys are taking this at a solely religious stand point. Sinners DO make the best saints. Only those who have sinned, are able to save the innocent from making those mistakes.

I think that statement explains why Johnny Cash was so authentic and it is by the way not "catholic" at all. Martin Luther said christians are always "simul iustus et peccator" because he thought that that gradual model of becoming better and better by degree to be wrong altogether. You never cease to be a sinner, never cease to need Gods mercy desperately. To deny this he would consider as a kind of self-delusion.

My take on it: sinners make the best saints because they understand other sinners and are also more relatable by sinners. Look at Johnny Cash, this guy was a sinner (he referred to himself as the biggest sinner), but people could relate to him more than a preacher because he had been down many of the same roads as they have. Who knows how many people because Christians or at least became better people because of him?

First off, the full quote is "The worst sinners make the best saints"

Also, it's not a Bono quote and it's not a Johnny Cash quote either. While they may have said it, it comes from an old English proverb with no recorded author.

To the person who said "It's a worthless statement thrown out as a euphemism for "judge not", trust me." Read the bible and don't judge what you don't understand. Read this verse if you think it's just a euphemism:

"Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” Luke 7:47

And to the person who said "the "sinners make the best saints" graffiti is kind of stupid. Everyone's a sinner. :) And everyone sanctified in Christ is a saint." While what you said is true to some degree, you didn't know the full saying and did not understand what you were criticizing. It's not stupid, it's right. Read the above verse for example.

Think of it this way...picture the worst offender, the meanest person on earth, the person that has done the most wrong and then...have him repent of all that he has done wrong (and mean it) and change for the better. A 180 change.
The witness of that change would be a catalyst for change in others far stronger than the life-long good example of another man.

Jesus came for the sinners, not the righteous.

"I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" Luke 5:32
This is also restated in many other verses.

Or maybe its just a friggin line in a video. Relax people and stop trying to tell the world how to be sanctified. Religion should be a personal experience between a person and whichever God they choose to believe in. People waste too much time trying to decipher what their gods want. Hello!! Dieties were created to explain the unknown why waste time trying to comprehend an entity whose very existence is to explain all of life's little mysteries that ancient man could not wrap their little brains around. Evrryone just shutup relax. Stop telling everyone what this or that means. Let each person find their own meaning, their own purpose.

...Would you be interested in this important type of information?

More importantly... Would you be intetested in knowing what He is like; and how much He loves you?

I don't claim to be perfect, or a prophet, or even smart. I'm just some average joe like you, who was humble enough to pray for God's help in getting to knowing Him. I will gladly share with anyone the resourses that he led me to which prove 100% exactly who He is, and how you can get to know Him yourself.

If The LORD has not, in His infinite wisdom, beneficence, & mercy, chosen to endow you w/ the grace of using your spell-check properly, I think I'll stick with the King James Version.
But I thank you for your most generous offer, and wish you well -- and happy fishing.
